Ages 2 - 4

Bring your little one to the zoo and give them an experience they will never forget!

Big Ape, Little Ape TUESDAY, JUNE 1    1:00-2:30 PM 

$10 member/$15 non- member

This workshop promises to bring smiles and giggles to your pre-school child.  They will meet a member of the great apes  (Orangutan) and the smallest of apes, (Gibbons).   Art activity and a treat included. 

 

Hoorah for Hedgehogs!  MONDAY, JUNE 7   4:00 PM – 5 PM 

$10 member/$15 non- member

Meet Chad and Tiffany, our resident African Pygmy Hedgehogs!  Paint a hedgehog picture and enjoy a spiky treat!

 

Teeny Trainers – Note :  ages 3 to 4 years– Taught by Addy Paul- Lead Trainer

Fee: $14 member/$18 non-member (Includes snack, clicker and training bucket/forceps)

Have you ever wondered how a zoo keeper examines a grizzly bear's paw, or how we can shift a monkey just by asking him to move, or why it seems so easy to brush an orangutan's teeth? It is called Animal Training! Chahinkapa Zoo staff are professionals in veterinary and enrichment training and now YOU can learn how! Be a trainer in a workshop designed just for your age group. Learn general training signals and words. Bring your favorite stuffed toy animal. Get a training clicker to take home. Instructor Addy Paul - Lead Keeper/Trainer. 

 

Spiders and Snakes  TUESDAY  JUNE 22  10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

This very fun workshop has you exploring Chahinkapa Zoo’s creepy crawlers.  Meet Tess our boa constrictor, Casper the rate snake, and George the tarantula!  Make a fun craft.

 

Oinks and Oreos  TUESDAY  JULY 13   2 PM – 3 PM

Meet our Guinea Pig, Oreo.  Learn about her care and make a guinea pig craft.

 Nabisco Oreos are a featured snack.  Nabisco Oreo cookies are made with sustainable palm oil making them rain forest friendly.

 

Zazzy Zizzy Zebras  THURSDAY  July 15  11:00 AM- 12 PM

Meet our zebra herd and see if you can tell them apart.   Make a zebra craft and make a striped treat! 

 

Cats Pajamas   WEDNESDAY  JULY 21   6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Fee: $10 member/$12 non-member

You are in for a purr-fect evening with this popular workshop brought back as a favorite from years ago.  First you will have a bedtime story, craft, and snack.  THEN you will follow the zoo keepers to the cat dens and watch as cheetahs, snow leopards, and cougars get put to bed.  Wear your pajamas! 

 

Old MacDonald

THURSDAY  July 29th 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Neigh, Baaaaa, Hee-haw!  This venture takes us into Grandpa’s Petting Zoo.  Hands on animal fun and craft.  

 

Teeny Veterinarians

TUESDAY  AUGUST 3  10:00 AM  – 11:30 AM

$15 members/$20 non-members (includes supplies)

Learn how animal doctors take good care of the zoo animals.  You will get a plush animal and veterinarian kit to help get you on your way in the animal health world!

 

Otters!  THURSDAY, August 5  10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Fee: $10 member/$12 non-member

Chahinkapa Zoo has three new otters and they are as playful as ever.  Enjoy a keeper talk and make an otterly delicious snack and craft.

Vegetable Gardening!  THURSDAY  JUNE 3  1:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Plant a vegetable garden with favorite food for monkeys, Tal, and bears.  Learn how fresh food is better for animals and people.

Lets Visit the Zoo Vegetable Garden!  See what vegetables are favorites of our animals.  Get ready to taste some deliciousness and take home a potted plant!

Bears! WEDNESDAY JUNE 2   9:00 AM – 10:30 AM

Come meet the grizzly bears Coco and Copper.  This class begins one hour prior to zoo opening as you will get to make treats and other enrichment!  You will watch as these two amazing animals enjoy your handiwork.  Fun awaits you!

 

Pond Life  THURSDAY JUNE 10    10:00 AM – Noon

Yes!  We are going back to the pond in this favorite zoo adventure.  See what makes a pond come to life.  Explore gently with nets identify your living things under a microscope.

Primate Pizza Party  TUESDAY, JUNE 29   11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

$15/members/$20 non-members (fee includes a pizza lunch).

Monkeys and gibbons don’t eat pizza! Or DO they?  You will make a healthy veggie pizza that is perfect for primates!  You’ll get to watch them gobbling up your chef masterpieces while enjoying a pizza picnic of your own.

Our African pygmy hedgehogs, Chad and Tiffany, are waiting to meet you!  This species is very fascinating.  Learn about their care and paint a prickly picture!

Learn to identify different animal tracks and how tracking is used for different leisure sports. Make a plaster cast to take home.

This tour takes you to the zoo savannah to see white rhinos, zebras, and cheetahs!  You won’t want to miss this opportunity for an up close and personal view!  Enjoy some Cheetos and Juice.  Note Frito Lay Cheetos snacks are made with sustainable palm oil making them rain forest friendly.

 

“Clues to Discovery”  THURSDAY, JULY 8  10 AM – 11:30 AM

This workshop is fashioned after the book “Clues to Discovery”  by JR Hunkins (MN author) exploring the science field of classification.   Young biologists and zoologists will get a head start into the amazing world of plants and animals with this guide.  Students will have fun putting their new classification skills to work in the zoo!

 

 

Hey You! Kangaroo!  MONDAY JULY 12  1:00 – 2:00 PM

Let’s go to the outback and hop among the red kangaroo mob.  Learn about these fascinating marsupials!  You will even get to spy a close up of a gator!

On this North American species tour you will learn about Elk, Bison, Grizzly bears, River otters, and mountain lions.   You will explore American Animal folklore and

 

Bears of the World  WEDNESDAY  JUNE 2   1:00PM - 2:30PM

Learn about eight species of bears worldwide.  You will go into our grizzly bear habitat to prepare it for Coco and Copper before they go on exhibit for the day.  Make food treats and other enrichment.  Watch as they hunt for your snacks.

 

Pond Life  THURSDAY JUNE 10    1:30 PM – 3:30 PM

Junior Zoo Keeping I (Choose one session)

June 8th and 9th 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

June 15th and 16th  10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

$45 fee (includes t-shirt)

This camp is designed for ages 9-14. This two day workshop allows young people to spend time with a Chahinkapa Zoo Keeper and learn the responsibilities and tasks of a zoo keeper.  Children get a behind-the-scenes tour of exhibits and learn about habitat planning, prepares zoo diets, explore the zoo medicine field and design their own zoo! The second day includes a short graduation ceremony where family is invited to share in the program. This is a pre-requisite to be a Junior Zoo Keeper Volunteer.  (See Jr. Zoo Keeping Club). 

 

Junior Zoo Keeping II

July 13th  and 14th    10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

(Bring sack lunch)

Pre-requisite: Jr. Zoo Keeping I

Fee $35 (includes t-shirt)

This second camp puts you in the middle of animal enrichment.  How does zoo staff keep the animals active and healthy in their habitat? Help the monkeys forage for fruit and prepare frozen fish pops for the bears. Zoo medicine is discussed more as students learn blow dart procedures. A short graduation ceremony is held on the second day where family is invited to view the results of your hard work. 

Junior Zoo Keeping Club

After graduation from Jr. Zoo Keeping I or II you may volunteer at the zoo for two hours each week. You will receive a club card and an invitation to the Zoo Friend Picnic in September. There is a $30 supervisor fee. Times are arranged with a zookeeper.

Junior Zoologists – Taught by Kathy Diekman

WEDNESDAY  JULY 21   11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Fee: $18 member/$20 non-member (includes binoculars and field guide)

This workshop is intended for those interested in biology or zoology field. Students will explore the outdoors with the Zoo Director identifying plant life, animals, tracking, and bird watching. They will record their findings in a biology field notebook and discuss jobs in the science world. 

 

Team H.O.C.Z.  Helping Out Chahinkapa Zoo

June 17th 1:00-2:00 p.m.

July 15th 1:00-2:00 p.m.

August 12th 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Fee: $5 each time for supplies

Help make enrichment items to assist the zoo keepers in their work with the animals.     

 

Conservation Club

Anyone 12 and older wishing to be a member of Chahinkapa Zoo’s Teen  Conservation Club please come to the first meeting on Wednesday, June 9 at 3 PM.  We will discuss projects the club can do to help local conservation efforts.  Two adventure trips may be planned.  No fees necessary at this time.

Niko’s Splash Dance – Selected Thursdays at 10:30 AM throughout the summer. Niko, the spider monkey takes a shower in his habitat.  Not a modest monkey, but a clean one!

Campfire Talks -  Selected Mondays at 7 PM gather around our campfire at the Chahinkapa Zoo Campground and visit about animals, nature, or other topics of the outdoors!
